GUSTINE PHOTOGRAPHS

Gustine Pioneer Families Exhibit Photographs

These are photographs supplied by Bob Brown and Gertrude Jensen Sheffield for the Gustine Pioneer Families Exhibit. These are pictures of the Miller Family and the Jensen Family.

Brothers Johann (John) D. & Wilhelm (William) C. Jensen. Photo taken at Wyk, Island of Föhr, in northern Germany, circa 1897 prior to their arrival to the Gustine area. Johann had come back to Germany to bring his 15 year old younger brother Wilhelm with him to California.

Johann (John) Dietrich Jensen and fiance Inge (aka Getje) Boyen, presumed to be an engagement photo taken at Wyk, Island of Föhr, northern Germany circa 1897. Getje arrived in San Francisco in 1901 and married John immediately.

Gertie Miller and William C. Jensen in wedding clothes on their honeymoon in Santa Cruz, CA, 1905. They were married at St. James Lutheran Church in Newman.

Peter and Kate (Jörgens) Miller in a formal studio photo. Circa 1990's location unknown.

Harvester pulled by a mule team at work in the hills west of Gustine. Operating one of these rigs on this kind of slope was quite dangerous considering the brakes and the mules temperaments. Circa 1900.

John H. Jensen (L) with "May", and brother William H. Jensen (R) holding the reins of "Prince". Taken at the Jensen hill ranch, circa 1914. They were sons of William C. and Gertie Jensen.

Peter Miller's house on the move from the hills to its longtime location west of Gustine in 1909. Built in 1903, it was lifted and pulled by the steam tractor seen here, along with a team of mules when the load was excessive for the machine.

The Gustine ranch of William C. and Gertie Jensen, taken at the corner of North Avenue and Jensen Road.  In 1913, the former Cleveland School building was purchased and moved from the hills onto the property, becoming the Jensen's home. Surrounding buildings were added later. Most of the added buildings are there today. The Jensens operated a dairy and poultry farm for most of the 20th century.  Photo date unknown, estimated 1930.

William H. Jensen, son of John D. & Getje Jensen, shows his horsemanship skills atop these two steeds. Picture date 1918.

Bill Miller Sr., son of Peter & Kate Miller, was known at area rodeos as a competent bronc rider. Here he works with a horse that appears to have an "independent attitude".  Photo date unknown, estimated 1930.

The Cleveland School when it was being used as a school in the hills near Pete Miller's place.
